How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliance(s) listed below.

  • WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content: Some alternative text of images is repeated as text
  • WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships: Desktop and mobile menu are not distinguishable, this is caused by the main menu appearing in both the header and footer of the site.
  • WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content: Some PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of the New Directions College website, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.

Known limitations with the New Directions College website:

  1. PDF documents: We are aware that some PDFs do not meet accessibility standards. We will do our best to ensure any PDFs added to the website are accessible. We are reviewing existing PDFs on the website and will replace with an accessible alternative. There may be times when we leave an inaccessible PDF on the website, in which case we will ensure we also include the information in html format.
  2. Downloadable documents: We are working to provide an online, accessible, version of every form and are working to improve the variety of ways we share information.
  3. Google Maps: Our aim is to ensure maps have relevant headings and a description of the map’s purpose.
  4. Videos: We aim for all embedded videos to have BSL, captions or transcripts.
  5. iFrames: We cannot guarantee that iFrame is accessible because it may be a third-party product that we have no control over. We are reviewing existing iFrames and replacing with an accessible alternative where possible.
  6. Tables: We aim for all tables to be accessible and have relevant titles, column and row headings.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is not accessible for the following reasons:

WCAG 3.1.1 – The language is missing within the settings of the PDF document

WCAG 1.3.1 – The document has elements that are not correctly tagged

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

We plan to add text alternatives for all images by July 19th 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

We are also working on making our PDF’s more accessible.

PDF’s such as the Strategic Development Plan and Quality Improvement Goals 2023-24 will be undergoing an accessibility update. We are aiming for this to be addressed by the 19th July 2024.
